Blawarthill Hospital

Conversion of former hospital building to form 4 dwellings and associated Passivhaus new build development to form 15 dwellings

The site has been designated for development for social housing as part of a wider master plan for the former Blawarthill Hospital site. Alongside the conversion of the 'C' listed hospital building, the proposals include the erection of 15no. newbuild properties sited between a newly constructed carriageway and significant design parameters posed by Tree Preservation Orders to the rear.

The new build terraced single storey bungalows have been designed to meet the Association's current demand for single bedroom accommodation. The exception to this are the two storey cottage flat blocks which ‘bookend’ the newbuild site; one of which has been designed to be fully wheelchair accessible. A simple material palette has been chosen to compliment the existing red ashlar sandstone of the hospital building.

Complimenting the adjacent proposed newbuild development, is the conversion of the former hospital building. Languishing in a state of significant deterioration, the design proposals grant a new lease of life to the building by sensitively adapting the internal arrangement to create 4 no. residential flats.
