Conversion of former Overtown Primary School into maisonette flats alongside associated new build development all for social rent.
The school building dates to the 1880’s with further wings added to the north and south between 1900 and 1910. Although not listed the school building remains one of the few historical buildings in the Overtown area and of the few that holds any significant architectural merit. Following the closure of the school the project saw the complete conversion of the building into 9no. maisonette dwellings one of which being fully wheelchair accessible.
Alongside the conversion a further 8no. terraced houses were constructed in the former playground of the school. Taking inspiration from the school building, the prominent feature gables on the new build element reflect the profile of the school, creating a modern interpretation of the original front and rear elevations. The massing of the houses along with the natural height of the pitched roofs of the school building creates a secluded and attractive courtyard style development within the existing boundary walls of the school site.
